Finding the link between Politics and Pop Culture.

Social media has been a portal for people to share the political views in a more public way, with celebrities and influencers using their platforms to promote social justice and political movements. I wanted to explore if this has changed the way politics is viewed and interperated.

Is it all a fake or does it make a difference?

The idea came to me after a conversation with my friends, most not interested in politics at all or even registered to vote. After speaking about different movements happening online I realised they only take in news from celebrities they follow promoting these movements, such as #MeToo or Black Lives Matter.

While pop culture has always been an avenue for change as it takes in the world around, it whether it be in art or music. I feel we are living more than ever in an era where all outlets of media or sport have agendas for justice or political statements. Either they critique or endorse politicians or movements.

For this project I decided to look deeper into whether or not pop culture is changing our view on politics. This lead me into choosing celebrities and influencers from different streams of media and monitoring their social media follower accounts and aligning it with different moments in their careers that correlated with times they have been outspoken in some type of political way. As a medium I used monthly follower counts on the individuals twitter accounts.
